About
Artist Statement:
As an artist, I work hard to lift myself to new heights and create artworks that both captivate viewers, as well as myself. I work with an assortment of mediums. My main area of focus is Ceramics, but I am also skilled in Traditional/Digital Illustration, and Animation. I have experience in making functional pottery, hand building, sculpture, graphic novels, animations, posters, and paintings. I am aiming to work towards getting an MFA in Ceramics and heading into education. I tend to have a very refined style, making sure that my work is smooth and consistent, in order to provide the best functionality and comfortability in use.
I aim to move audiences by giving them something to identify with by interaction. Thematically I focus on life, death, the afterlife, and the circle of life. I tend to focus the most on death because I find the concept of an “unknown inevitability” to be fascinating, beautiful, and horrifying. I show these themes throughout my work in motifs depicted on my ceramics, as well as throughout the stories within my illustrations and animations. I take a lot of inspiration from the people that I know because I learn a lot through other people. I listen to their life stories, their regrets and accomplishments and use them as guides in my own life, and that gives me a lot of inspiration in turn. I am very experimental in my artworks, and love to constantly try new things as I evolve as an artist. I improve the most by pushing the limits of the medium, and seeing what is visually appealing through a process of trial and error.
I get a lot of influence from the knowledge of other artists both contemporary and classical, media, books, anime, and music. Audiences and peers alike respond very positively to my work and view me as a thorough and qualitative artist. Within my ceramic works, people tend to gravitate towards the meticulous craftsmanship, interesting shapes and forms, application of glazes or underglazes, and surface decorations. Within my illustrated works, viewers appreciate the clean line art, use of colors, storytelling, and style variety. I like to work as a part of a team, especially in a studio setting, where I’m working with many other talented artists to create the best space possible for ourselves by way of supplies, and support. I enjoy pushing others to stay motivated, explore new ways of playing with their chosen mediums, find many different ways to overcome their creative obstacles, and create works that both themselves and their target audience will love.
This also rings true through my aspirations to educate. I find it to be very rewarding teaching others the knowledge that I have gathered throughout my life, and I look forward to seeing how far people can go with the information that they gained from me. I love being able to help people, give them a space to create, and show them new ways to express themselves through art. I also thoroughly enjoy the process of learning for myself, and I always find new things to research extensively. I like finding ways to incorporate that information into my art, or to better understand my art, myself, or the world around us.
